IR(R) Training

Instrument Rating (Restricted) Training

The IR(R) rating (previously the IMC rating) allows PPL holders to exercise privileges to fly under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) and in Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC), subject to specified restrictions and limitations. An IR(R) rating cannot be added to a LAPL - see CAA IRR licence details.

The theoretical knowledge training covers:

  • Privileges of the Rating
  • Human Physiological Factors
  • Flight Instruments & Aircraft Systems
  • Aeronautical Information Services - NOTAMS, UK AIP, AIS, AICs
  • Flight Planning - Meteorology, Altimetry, Terrain Clearance, Navigation Aids, Radar Approach Procedures
  • R/T Phraseology (CAP413)

The IR(R) theory exam comprises 25 multiple-choice questions with a pass mark of 75%, and is valid for 21 months for licence issue or 12 months following the IR(R) flight test. It requires a pilot to demonstrate the ability to complete a PLOG for a defined route using specified weather conditions and considering airspace restrictions, available navigation aids and arrival airfield procedures. Competence in the use of the CRP1 ‘whiz wheel’ or similar flight computer is essential !
